Since the start of the team in 2012, there have been many inquiries, myself included, regarding the name Bosom Buddies. Each year I do get a couple people who ask its meaning and I thought it would be a good idea to put it in writing.
Yes, when used in isolation, as part of the English language, the word bosom generally means a woman's breast, therefore it may seem uncomfortable to use the word as part of our team name.
However, there is no need for the discomfort. If you do a quick search on Google, you will see why. This explanation was the best one I found.
The term "bosom friend" is the original english term which is used a lot in old books. It comes from the Latin phrase "sodalis pectoris" which means "friend/companion of the soul/bosom", because the Romans believed that the heart and the chest were the seat of the soul. As for the buddy part; The word buddy is an American word, and not widely used anywhere else. Somewhere over the course of 1900's the word swap was used & instantly caught on because of it's alliteration. It definitely caught on in the entertainment industry; a few songs and a TV show were named the phrase."
Yes, the team name was selected specifically because of my breast cancer diagnosis, but it means so much more than boobs, breasts, and/or bosoms. The team name truly represents us, "friends and companions of the soul". Together we work towards the common goal to make a difference!
Thank you for being a part of our awesome team,
Team Bosom Buddies!
